SHADE MATCHING
Please read this as it will save you and us a lot of time if a shade match is required.
WE DO NOT CHARGE FOR HCI - COLOR MAPPING
America loves white and bright restorations. But that is not always what is required and sometimes not required at all in multiple units are required or a restoration is not in direct view. When a match is requested by a patient then shade taking across the past twenty years has been ofter a time consuming problem.
Since the development of vacuum fired dental ceramics in the mid-sixties, it soon became apparent that dental technicians had to learn how to match standing dentition which often was at the midline of our dentition or close to it. At this position any error in color is noticed immediately. So what is the problem, why has it been so difficult to go beyond the standard shade guide when a patient is demanding - A CLOSE MATCH.
After years of trail and error, the conclusion is simple as different ceramic systems deliver different results as the shade guides we use are not made from the same material as the dental powders we use. Add a season or two, time of day, rain or shine, indoors or outdoors, you are fighting a loosing battle because there has never been a way to communicate light or color accurately to a ceramic brush under a work bench light that is the wrong light rating to where the shade was taken.
In 2015 while working in the Mojave-Desert a solution had to be found as I was continuously asked to match accurately anterior dentition. That became a complete re-think as no possibility was possible to change what we cannot change. We went back to basics in how find a solution that has ben difficult for forty plus years regardless of where you are. The solution was to drop the shade guides and the notes and pictures of poor quality and look at the issue from the ground up. The direct was to be able to use an image and break it down to what the camera actually without pixel compression. That got us on track to a new direction and a solution.
A Raw (Canon) or NEF (Nikon) image around 50mg carries millions of color information that is not visible to the naked eye, but it is a language the camera uses. has a lot more information than you or we can see. Now we know how to read and use that information it has changed the game. All you need is a DSLR that can take 50mg images in Raw formats and most DSLR cameras can do that.
We have adapted available raw software to accommodate a dental technique and not a photographic technique. All you have to do is set your camera to take a Raw and a Jpeg image at the same time. The JPEG is for filling as a quick view image and the Raw images we break down into optical information, not color information and that tells us a lot more across the Y-axis. So far this has proven very successful.
